How to Get Natural-Looking Highlights
That Don't Look Stripy

Almost nobody walks into a salon asking for "dimensional low-contrast placement with a shadow root." What they actually say is: I want it to look natural. Highlights that look like you spent a summer outside, not like you sat in a chair. If that's what you're after, here's how it's really done, and what to ask for when you book in Los Angeles.

Why Highlights Look "Stripy" in the First Place

The stripy, obvious look almost always comes from the same thing: uniform foils placed in tidy rows, lifted too light, with too much contrast against your base color and no toning to tie it together. It's fast, it's formulaic, and it's why so many people say they "can't do highlights." You can. It just has to be done differently.

The Techniques That Actually Look Natural

Natural highlights come down to placement, contrast, and blending. These are the approaches we reach for at Park & Eve, and which one is right depends on your hair:

What to Ask For When You Book

You don't need the technical vocabulary. Bring a photo or two of the result you like, and say the honest version: you want it to look natural, grow out well, and not need constant upkeep. A good colorist will translate that into the right technique for your hair type and base color. If anything, tell us what you don't want, that's often more useful than a reference photo.

Natural Color Is Lower Maintenance, Too

Here's the bonus: because these techniques grow out softly instead of leaving a hard regrowth line, they're genuinely lower maintenance. Many clients stretch appointments to 10 to 12 weeks or more, with the occasional gloss to refresh tone. Natural-looking and easy to live with tend to be the same thing.
